"The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind."
— Dr. Maria Montessori
Sunrise Montessori School has been a cornerstone of the Franklin, MA community since 2004. What began as a single classroom has grown into a warm, 3,000 sq ft home for learning — serving over 415 students and 320+ families across two decades. We've built something truly special: a calm, beautiful environment where young learners ages 2.9–6 thrive at their own natural pace.
We follow the time-tested philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori — an approach that recognizes children as naturally curious, self-directed learners. Our prepared environments, certified guides, and carefully designed Montessori materials work together to ignite a genuine love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
Children choose their work, moving at their own pace through developmentally appropriate challenges.
Our classrooms are thoughtfully arranged to invite exploration, independence, and concentration.
Multi-age classrooms (ages 3–6) foster mentorship, empathy, and a rich social environment.
Every guide at Sunrise holds AMS credentials and brings deep experience, warmth, and genuine passion for the Montessori approach.

📌 Enrollment steps:
Our prepared environment offers rich, interconnected learning across every domain of child development — always following the child's natural curiosity and readiness.
Care of self, care of environment, food preparation, grace & courtesy, and control of movement. These activities build the concentration and fine motor skills that underpin all future learning.
Classic Montessori materials — Pink Tower, Knobbed Cylinders, Color Tablets — develop visual, tactile, auditory, and stereognostic discrimination, sharpening the mind's ability to classify and understand the world.
Spoken language, phonemic awareness, sandpaper letters, the moveable alphabet, phonics readers, and creative writing. Children often begin reading spontaneously through our materials.
Concrete manipulatives — Golden Beads, Bead Chains, Stamp Game — make abstract math concepts tangible, covering quantity, operations, place value, fractions, and introductory geometry.
Botany, zoology, physical science, and environmental stewardship through observation, experiment, and care of living plants and animals within our classroom ecosystem.
Puzzle maps, globes, flags, and cultural celebrations — Diwali, Lunar New Year, Harvest Festival — cultivate deep respect for global communities and the diversity of human culture.
Process-focused exploration — painting, collage, clay, printmaking — celebrating individual expression.
Songs, rhythm, instruments, and movement — building listening, pattern recognition, and joyful self-expression.
Role play, storytelling, and collaborative performances build language, empathy, and confidence.
Explicitly taught social skills: greetings, conflict resolution, table manners, and care for community.
The kindergarten year at Sunrise is extraordinary. Older children become classroom leaders and mentors — reinforcing their own learning while nurturing younger peers. They pursue extended research projects, advanced math operations, chapter book reading, and independent creative writing.
Every day follows a gentle, predictable rhythm that allows children to settle, focus, and thrive. Consistency gives children the security to take on new challenges.
Enter via the upper Moseley Complex entrance (one-way). Pull alongside the fire lane toward the playground — Sunrise staff will greet each child at the car and walk them into the classroom. If walking your child in, park in the upper lot. Please don't park in the drop-off circle.
Teachers give individual and small group lessons across all curriculum areas. Woven in: Circle/Group Time (~20 min) with songs, calendar, weather, and large group lessons. Once a week, students visit Sensation Station at the Hayward St complex for cooperative, social-emotional, and motor-skill activities.
Children bring their own snack each day — fruits, veggies, yogurt, cheese, muffins, or crackers work great. Please label snack and lunch items separately. A dedicated snack pouch alongside a lunchbox is a handy system. Sunrise provides fresh fruits and vegetables weekly for Practical Life activities.
Both classrooms head outside for recess beginning around 11 AM. Children run, climb, and socialize freely. An indoor break is offered during inclement weather.
Children on a morning-only schedule are dismissed beginning at 11:30 AM. Full-day students continue with lunch and the afternoon program.
Children eat lunch from home in their classroom. Please send an individual water bottle and label all containers, water bottles, and ice packs with your child's name.
Preschoolers rest in their classrooms. Kindergarten students continue one-on-one and small group lessons with their Head Teacher — extensions from all curriculum areas. Rest is not required for kindergartners.
All students return to the work cycle for focused, independent work across curriculum areas.
Students prepare for the end of the day, then enjoy outdoor recess or an indoor break during inclement weather.
Students are dismissed from the playground area. On rainy or inclement weather days, full-day students will be brought to your car in the car line — please pull past the walkway toward the playground.
Afterschool Program: 2:30 – 5:30 PM
Please notify the office ahead of time if your child is joining the afterschool program, and pack an extra afterschool snack. See Extended Day details →

"Sunrise Montessori completely changed how I think about education. Our daughter walked in as a shy 3-year-old who barely spoke, and two years later she leads small group discussions and helps younger children with their work. The transformation has been extraordinary."

"As a working parent, I was nervous about finding a school that truly met my son where he was. The teachers here are incredible — they know every child individually, they communicate constantly, and the calm environment has made such a difference for our anxious boy."

"We've had two children go through Sunrise and we wouldn't change a thing. They both entered kindergarten reading, confident, and genuinely curious. The Montessori method works — and Sunrise does it beautifully. It's worth every penny."
